HeWhoWalksWithTigers Interviews

1 .Tell us something about you.

I live for tigers and my goal in life is to secure the species a long term future. I am currently a member of the International Tiger Coalition and will be living in Thailand in a short period of time to do field work in conservation.

2. When did you start with photography or drawing?

I started photography in 2003 through a high-school media arts course.

3. What equipment do you use? And what do you recommend (equipment wise)

I use a Sony DSC-H7 camera. I would recommend it to people who want a higher end digital camera, without the hassles of going for a DSLR. However, I would love to own a Canon Rebel.

4. Where is your favourite shooting place?

The zoo...specifically Jungle Cat World, where I volunteer.

5. Do you have some tips for people concerning big cat photography?

Have respect for your subjects...they shouldn't simply be a number. Instead, endeavor to tell something about the animal and do what you can to educate and inspire people to get to know them. They lend their beauty to you so you are indebted to them. Helping their species is a great way to give back.

6. Why do you like big cat photography and what was your first photograph that was your personal favourite

I like big cat photography because it is an opportunity for me personally to capture personal moments with big cats I work with, but most importantly it gives me an opportunity to engage people about big cats. I aim to get people to become familiar with animals and species so that they can develop a connection and fall in love with them. As Steve Irwin would say, people want to save things that they love...conservation is my ultimate goal and photography helps me with that.

My first photo that was my favourite would have to be one of a little sweetheart named Kumara ( [link]). Usually she would get really hyper if I was near so I could never get a good photo of her. She happened to pause for a moment which was when I took the photo. Her charming personality shines through in the photo and it will always be special to me.

7. Which Big cat is your favourite and why?

The tiger...however, it is a bit complicated. It is a long, fateful story. In the end, the tiger has a special place with me and it is a connection that runs deep.

I have soft spots for the snow leopard, lion and cougar though...

8. Which Big cat is your favourite photo/drawing object?

The tiger, simply because I think they are one of the most beautiful animals ever to walk the earth.

9. Tell us an interesting fact of a big cat.

There may be fewer than 3500 tigers left in the wild with numbers still decreasing.

10. What would be your dream location to photograph Big cats?

India!

11. Who is your favourite photographer/artist that inspires you?

My favourite photographer might just be Colin Dunjohn for his amazing tiger photos. Artist? God, surely.

12. How did you get interested in Big Cats?

My interest in big cats began when I first found out what was happening to the tiger in the wild. I researched, went to a zoo and communicated with one. It was profound enough that I wanted to do something to help, so I dropped everything in my life to go into tiger conservation. Working with, photographing and learning about other big cats soon followed.

Durantenduring Interview

1 .Tell us something about you.

I uh...have always been that know-it-all girl in school, especially concerning animals. I can't tell if it irritates or fascinates people, so I choose not to shut up.

2. When did you start with photography or drawing?

I'm been taking pictures all my life, starting with little-kid-cameras. But it isnt something you NEED to get into early on!

3. What equipment do you use? And what do you recommend (equipment wise)

I use BOTH a Nikon D50 and a Canon Powershot G7- the Nikon (and all corresponding lenses) is a D-SLR, and I use it for macro and telephoto shots. It's my main man. The Canon is a more portable, but still SLR-feature, "point and shoot" type, which I use for certain macro shots. It's extremely versatile, and easy to use if you just want a higher-end camera.

For gear, I highly recommend Nikon, Nikkor, Tamron, and Sigma...but no others. Be aware that while Canons can sometimes be cheaper...they have a higher repair rate.

4. Where is your favourite shooting place?

My favorite shooting place is in Montana, with Troy Hyde and his animals....but for an actual "place"- Out of Africa wildlife park. Go during sunset hours for the best shots!! It's in Camp Verde, Arizona, and such a intimate experience.

5. Do you have some tips for people concerning big cat photography?

I'd say that, with shrinking populations of wild great cats, be happy with zoo shots. Many people don't consider it with artistic merit in mind, but it does take lots of patience and time. BUT, if you MUST get wild shots...go to Africa.

6. Why do you like big cat photography and what was your first photograph that was your personal favourite

I've always been so thrilled with the spirituality and power of great cats, and have ALWAYS felt an urgent need to help them, any way I can. My personal favorite shot was of a shot of Texico the tiger , during a photoshoot with Troy Hyde in Montana. Texi formed a perfect A, and stared me right in the eye.

7. Which Big cat is your favourite and why?

Tigers. Every time one comes into view I feel a deep bond with them. I hope, someday, to open a sanctuary for tigers, somewhere in the world. They are my power animal, my "totem", if you will. They speak to me.

8. Which Big cat is your favourite photo/drawing object?

The same- they are pieces of artwork in themselves. Snow leopards are a close second, though!

9. Tell us an interesting fact of a big cat.

All felines have pheromone-sensing organs in the roofs of their mouths called Vomeronasal organs, or VNO. The organ itself is accessed through the nostril, but often times you will see cats open their mouth and stick out their tongues (the Chinese call this an "Ick face"). This is to get a stronger whiff of the passing pheromones.

10. What would be your dream location to photograph Big cats?

I will, someday in my life, travel to Siberia to see the rarest of the rare tigers. I cope well in extreme cold temperatures!

11. Who is your favourite photographer/artist that inspires you?

There are very many people in the world who inspire me, on many many different levels. More than anything, though: The knowledge that each individual thought in our brains is the most unique thought in the world, because there will always be an infinite number of differing views on the SAME thought, that are just as concrete and plausible to others' minds as your own is to yours.

12. How did you get interested in Big Cats?

by Big Cats, do you mean the club? In that case, it was only natural! I find much beauty here.

Chrino Interview

1 .Tell us something about you.

I originally started painting animals so that I could eventually paint a believable dragon. I sort of got stuck painting animals, probably because I enjoy it so much.

2. When did you start with photography or drawing?

I've always drawn, since I can remember, but whenever anyone asked to see my portfolio, I didn't have one. So about 10 yrs ago, I decided to get one together and also teach myself how to paint.

3. What equipment do you use? And what do you recommend (equipment wise)

I use oils and sometimes acrylics, on canvas. I also dabble with digital, but mainly this is for mocking up ideas.
Most people, when they take up painting, seem to try watercolours, and fear oils, but you should have a go. Just take it slow, and if it starts to get muddy, then leave it well alone until dry. It will only get worse, the more you fiddle. I personally can't get on with w/colour. I can't stop fiddling with it and it just doesn't suit my style.
So just because one medium might fail you, it doesn't mean that another will too.

4. Where is your favourite shooting place?

I paint all of my pic's in my spare bedroom/studio.

5. Do you have some tips for people concerning big cat painting?

Observe references very closely and be as accurate as possible when it comes to details, habitat, even incidental animals, like butterflies etc, that you may add to it. Make sure they all live in the same area.
Be wary of things like eye highlights too. Most are flash reflections and learning what is a natural highlight, will make your pic's more believable.
As regards painting itself, I have too many tips to list here. Most of which, are simply gathered by good observation and practice. Learn from each pic you do and don't be scared to try new things. It doesn't matter if it goes wrong, but you may also learn something.

6. Why do you like big cat painting and what was your first painting that was your personal favourite?

I'm not sure really. I love all animals and I do paint other subjects, but I do tend to paint more big cats than anything else. They're just so adorable I guess.
My personal favourite is the next painting. It always is. I'm never completely happy and I'm always seeking to improve myself. Typical disgruntled artist I suppose.

7. Which Big cat is your favourite and why?

I don't have a fav. They are all beautiful and each has its own unique quality.

8. Which Big cat is your favourite photo/drawing object?

Again, I don't have a fav. Tigers are always a good subject to paint. I mean, find me a wildlife artist that hasn't painted one.

9. Tell us an interesting fact of a big cat.

Mmmm? I can't think of one off hand, but I have an interesting small cat fact.
Apparently, if a cat falls from a tall building, it will survive from below and above the 5th floor area.
From below, it will land softly enough to survive and from above, it will incorporate a gliding effect, also landing softly enough.
Yet, from around the 5th floor height, it will die. It is too high to land softly and too low to start the gliding.
Sorry, not really what you asked for, but it's all I have atm. And don't go trying this out. We don't want the streets full of dead cats, lol.

10. What would be your dream location to paint Big cats?

I would love to go to Africa or India. Anywhere there are big cats really, even the Himalayas.

11. Who is your favourite photographer/artist that inspires you?

There are so many great wildlife artists out there. I respect any decent painting, regardless of name. You can learn something from virtually any pic.

12. How did you get interested in Big Cats?

Because they are there. How can you not be into these beautiful creatures?
